What it is
A name I gave this technique based on the idea of trying to take a selfie with the rear-facing camera on a phone: you have to turn the phone around backwards and still try to operate it. This technique is used to combat the Recall vs Recognition problem.
How to do it
This technique involves reading some material, and then turning away from the material so that you can’t see it, and trying to recall it. Explain it in your own words, all the way through, like you were teaching someone else the idea. Then look back at the material and see if you got it right. When studying on a phone, this can look like taking an awkward selfie, but the technique is applicable in other contexts.
When to apply it
Any time that you’re reading text, whether it’s the first time or part of your review. This is similar to the Feynman technique in that it's explaining the material in your own words, but is quicker and doesn't have the benefits of utilizing a partner.
