Lost your motivation? Here are three things to look for if you're bored when studying a topic:
- Novelty. Rather than "why do I care about this" ask "how is it different from what I already know? how is it new?"
- Surprise. Try to guess based on existing knowledge what this next thing is that you're going to learn. Make predictions about the conclusion of a lecture or the thesis of a paper. Then, you'll either be proven right or wrong, and either way can be unexpected. If you're wrong, try to understand why, and make a new prediction for the next thing.
- Intrigue. Ask questions about the topic that you're hoping the lecture or paper will answer. Look carefully for the answers to these questions as you ingest the material. At the end, you'll either have focused well to try to find the answers and gotten them, or you'll feel discontent over the lack of answers to your questions which can prompt further study.
