Zone of Proximal Development by Lev Vygotsky describes a central zone of "what can I do by myself" (stuff I already know), surrounded by a zone of "what can I do with help" (stuff I can learn with a teacher/book), surrounded by "what I can't do" where I won't succeed even with assistance.
